Invisalign vs clear bracesAt Central Park South Dental (Midtown NYC) we are using Invisalign Clear Braces or as sometimes called invisible braces to correct numerous orthodontic problems including crooked or misaligned teeth and poor occlusion. Invisalign Clear Braces consists of a series of clear plastic aligners that look a little like tooth whitening trays and which are virtually invisible.

In addition to Invisalign Clear Braces we offer a wide range of restorative, preventative and cosmetic dental procedures in Midtown, NYC

Beautifully Straight Teeth

Beautifully straight teeth can look immensely attractive, greatly adding to the appeal of a smile. In addition, a straighter smile can be a healthier smile as teeth are easier to keep clean and free from disease.

Very few people are born with their teeth perfectly in alignment and may not have had the opportunity to wear braces as a child. The thought of having highly visible ‘train tracks’ as an adult can be very off-putting which is why Invisalign is such a popular system.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a braces system that uses sophisticated technology and is able to correct numerous orthodontic problems. You may hear Invisalign being called invisible braces as it uses a series of clear plastic aligners that look a little like tooth whitening trays and which are virtually invisible.

The aligners fit tightly over the teeth and gently move them into positions that will have pre-determined by our dentist. Each set of aligners is worn for two weeks before being discarded for the next set in the series.

Treatment continues until the teeth are fully straightened and can take anywhere from a few months to two years, depending on the nature of the problems requiring correction. Most people will need to wear the aligners for approximately one year.

Dental Problems Can Be Treated With Invisalign

Invisalign to Treat Orthodontic Problems

Invisalign is able to treat a wide range of orthodontic problems that include crooked or misaligned teeth and poor occlusion, where the teeth do not bite together correctly.

Invisalign to Straighten Teeth

Invisalign can straighten teeth that are protrusive, crooked or overlapping or which are rotated. It can correct open bites, where your front teeth cannot bite together, even when the back teeth are in contact, and crossbites, where your teeth do not bite together correctly on one side of your mouth or both.

Invisalign to Treat Overbite & Underbite

Invisalign can also help if you have an overbite and where your upper teeth are biting too far forward of your lower teeth. An underbite is the opposite problem, where your lower teeth will bite in front of your lower teeth.

Invisalign produces braces that can realign all the teeth in your mouth, as well as a system that is more cosmetically oriented and which will concentrate on just straightening your front teeth.

Invisalign Procedure

You will need to have a full consultation with our dentist who will examine your teeth and jaws. If you decide to go ahead with treatment we will take dental impressions, photographs and x-rays.

Invisalign has special software that will help us plan your treatment. The software creates 3-D virtual images of your teeth and jaws and allows us to plan each tooth movement.

One of the great advantages of Invisalign is that you will be able to see how your teeth will move during treatment through viewing these virtual images. This software is also used to create your nearly invisible aligners.

You’ll be supplied with several sets of aligners so you will only need to come and see us every so often during treatment.

What Can I Expect During Invisalign Treatment?

Treatment should have very little impact on your everyday life. You simply need to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours each day, but they can be taken out for eating and for brushing and flossing.

This does mean it is extremely easy to maintain good dental health and there is no need to change your diet in any way.  The aligners should be reasonably comfortable to wear, but it is common to experience some degree of discomfort with all types of orthodontic treatment as your teeth are being forced to move.

With Invisalign this is most likely occur within the first day or two of wearing a new set of aligners and the feeling should soon settle down. We will need to see you at regular intervals, normally every six weeks or so and this is just to check treatment is progressing as planned and should not take up too much of your time.

Invisalign After Treatment

By the end of treatment you should have a beautifully straight smile, provided you have worn your aligners as directed. Once treatment is completed it’s important that you wear retainers which are made from the same nearly invisible clear plastic as your aligners.

Retainers are essential for ensuring your teeth remain in their new positions until they have settled down. You won’t need to wear these retainers forever and we will tell you when you can start reducing their usage.
