At Central Park South Dental (Midtown NYC) in addition to Porcelain Dental Veneers we offer a wide range of restorative, preventative and cosmetic dental procedures
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain dental veneers consist of very thin slips of porcelain almost like a false fingernail and which fit exactly over the front surfaces of teeth.
Veneers can be extremely useful in helping to hide minor imperfections in teeth, as a stand-alone procedure or as part of a smile makeover.
Our dentist may suggest using porcelain veneers if you have one or two teeth that are chipped or cracked or which have become worn down. Porcelain dental veneers can also be useful for hiding the shape of a tooth that is perhaps too small, or for closing up or minimizing spaces in between teeth.
You may wish to use porcelain dental veneers if you have one or two teeth out of alignment and where it isn’t really necessary to have Invisalign to correct them.
This treatment is often used in conjunction with teeth whitening and can be particularly good for covering up teeth that don’t respond to whitening treatments, for example if they have had root canal therapy or are internally stained and cannot be effectively bleached.
Who Can Have Dental Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are suitable for anyone who has strong, healthy teeth. We might not recommend veneers if your teeth have large fillings or if we feel they aren’t quite strong enough for this treatment.
In this case we can suggest an alternative way to improve the appearance of your teeth, for example using a porcelain dental crown to completely protect and cover up the tooth.
If you grind or clench your teeth then veneers may not be suitable until you have received treatment for this condition. This is because the habit could damage them, causing them to chip or break.
Porcelain Veneers Procedure
First of all it’s necessary for you to decide how many veneers you wish to have. Our dentist can assess your teeth and will offer advice on how many are required. The next step will be to prepare your teeth for the veneers. This is normally carried out under local anesthetic and involves removing a very small amount of tooth enamel to create sufficient room for the veneers.
A typical porcelain dental veneer is approximately 0.5 mm in thickness but removing a small amount of your tooth structure ensures the final result doesn’t feel bulky and helps provide the best aesthetic results.
Once your teeth are prepared, we’ll take a detailed dental impression that is sent to our dental laboratory so your veneers can be handcrafted to our exact specifications. While your veneers are being made we can protect your natural teeth with temporary veneers.
Modern porcelains are amazingly natural so you can be sure the final result will blend in beautifully with the rest of your teeth. Once the veneers are ready, you can return to our dental practice to have them permanently cemented in place.
Porcelain Veneers After Care
Your new veneers are easy to look after as you can simply brush and floss them as you would your natural teeth. We recommend regular checkups and hygiene appointments to help your veneers last longer.
With proper care, your new veneers should last for many years before they need replacing. This procedure is generally irreversible due to the fact that we almost certainly will need to remove some tooth structure.
All procedures are performed in our Midtown NYC, Central Park South dental center. If you have any questions about Porcelain Dental Veneers or to make an appointment please call our Midtown Manhattan dental office:
