What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation Sleep Dentistry in Midtown NYC

Sedation Sleep Dentistry in Midtown NYC

Sedation dentistry involves the use of carefully controlled sedatives to enable a patient feel more relaxed during treatment.

The effects can range from feeling less nervous or anxious but awake, to feeling more deeply relaxed or sleepy.

During sedation dentistry you will still be aware of your surroundings and will be able to respond to our staff. With deeper sedation you may not remember much about your appointment afterwards.

The amount of sedative administered can vary according to an individual’s needs and we ensure every patient is continually monitored during treatment and for a while afterwards as we will want to ensure you are fully recovered before you go home.

Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can be useful for anyone who is nervous of dental visits or who has phobias about receiving dental treatment. It can be good for someone who has a strong gag reflex and who finds treatment uncomfortable, or who requires a substantial amount of dental treatment, as we can complete more work during an appointment when we know a patient is fully relaxed and comfortable.

Different Forms of Sedation Dentistry;

Pain-Free Dental Injections

Dental anxiety over dental injections is very common and for some people it can be enough to put them off receiving essential dental care. This is why we have invested in a special device that enables us to give pain-free injections. DentalVibe® is a device that gently vibrates the gum tissues which in turn sends a message to the sensory area of the brain, telling it to concentrate on the vibration and not the injection.

We also administer dental injections very carefully, controlling the flow of anesthetic as it enters into the gum tissues. Often the discomfort of an injection is caused by the anesthetic being administered too quickly rather than being caused by the very fine needle used to give the injection. We find knowing anesthetic can be administered in a manner that is pain-free can be sufficient for some people to overcome any anxieties.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is already familiar to many people. This gas is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen and is administered through a small, comfortable mask that will fit over your nose. The gas produces a sensation of feeling deeply relaxed within just a few seconds and it is extremely safe. You will still be aware of everything happening around you and you will still be able to communicate with our dental team. Once the gas is turned off, it is soon eliminated from the body and this is the only form of sedation where you safely drive yourself home.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is administered in the form of a pill or liquid a short while before your appointment. The exact level of sedation provided can range from mild to moderate, depending on the strength of the sedative. You should feel deeply relaxed during treatment.

Afterwards we will want to keep an eye on you for a short while until the sedative has worn off and you will need someone to take you home and to stay with you for the rest of the day. This is just a precaution to make sure you are completely okay.

Initial Consultation for Sedation Dentistry

During your initial consultation for sedation dentistry, we can discuss the level of sedation which will best meet your needs. We will explain exactly how each type of sedation will work and what to expect during and after treatment.

Before administering any sedative, we fully assess a person’s suitability which is based on medical history and medications currently being used. We take every precaution to ensure patient safety during any form of sedition dentistry as this is always our top priority.

All procedures are performed in our Midtown NYC, Central Park South dental center. If you have any questions about Sedation Dentistry or to make an appointment please call our Midtown Manhattan dental office:
